EASTER EGGS DIY
It is so easy to transform cheap plastic eggs into something more original. Take an old book, cartoon, newspaper, wrapping paper, paper napkin, or as here, a notebook, rip the pages into small pieces and just glue them on to the egg. Voila!
Happy Easter to all of you!
THE PERFECT GLASS CONTAINER
Like many others, I like to spend summer somewhere warm, and most of my summers are spent in Spain, which often means long hot days with sand, salty water and insects.
So to make sure I always have my drink clean and cold, I went to the local shop and bought some jars with nice lids. I got my son to make holes in the lids with a screwdriver to fit a straw.
A perfect glass container to bring to the beach or poolside or for a picnic. You’ll avoid sand, wasps and spilling!
And to fill them I suggest some white sangria:
• Slice some fruit (I used orange, lime, lemon and grapes)
• Fill a quarter up with ice cubes
• Top it with 50/50 white wine and Sprite/7up
Or skip the wine and replace it with sparkling water for a non alcoholic drink!
HOMEMADE BATHING SALT AND FOOTSCRUB
It’s time for your mother to take a break!
I know mothers (and women in general) are not always setting themselves first in line, children, spouse, family, work and friends are priority for many.
How about “offering” your mother time to some self pampering in the everyday life, if so only for a few minutes, and let her relax! Home spa is a favorite, a warm bath, candles, perhaps a glass with something refreshing and a magazine, then each mother is in heaven!
And a great thing with home spa, it doesn’t have to cost your shirt either. With simple ingredients you can make your own perfect spa products!
A nice idea is to refill shampoo etc. in glass bottles and carafes, it’ll make the bathroom look a bit more glamorous (who said anything about the practical aspect….?)
Bathing salt:
Mix 7 dl sea salt and 10 ts baking powder (optional, make the water more basic)
Add some essential oil e.g. lavender, rose, lemon. You could add some color, food color or natural colors from beetroot or blueberry. You could also add some herbs if you want. Mix it all together and let to dry on a dry surface. Fill a jar or, like I did, an antique carafe and keep it in a dry place.
Footscrub:
Blend a cup of sugar with a few drops of olive oil in a bowl and add some essential oil, peppermint is great for your feet (for color I used a couple of drops of beetroot juice).
DIY Easter eggs
Here a great idea if you don’t wanna dye your eggs with artificial colors.
Use what you have in your kitchen – either in your fridge or in your drawer. It’s not very complicated, but it takes a bit of time. For these eggs I used red onion skin, blueberry, spinach, lemon and beetroot. You can also try out: Onion skin, turmeric, saffron, yellow pepper, red pepper, cranberry, raspberry, red cabbage, red wine, coffee, tea….. Let the children take part in the process and perhaps they learn a little bit of kitchen chemistry.
Wash the eggs to get rid of the oily layer, then boil them for about 8 minutes. This is how you do it:
- Separately, boil some water with the food (one at a time) of your choice and a dash of vinegar for about 10-15 min until the water gets a strong colour.
- Cool the coloured water a bit before you put the eggs in. Let them stay there until you have the colour you want.
Some colours will get stronger when they dry and some will fade a bit. You just have to try it out.
A quick makeover…
I went to check out the Troc (one of those shops where you can buy and sell second-hand stuff like furniture), in Esch the other day.
I was searching for some specific items but ending buying some completely different objects. That’s how it is to be a style junkie, and always looking for interesting things and a great buy. This time my eyes zoomed in a beautiful crystal lamp. I was indeed ready to leave the lampshade since it looked rather filthy.
Luckily I didn’t, on my way back home I came up with this idea. To spray paint the shade in black and copper. I normally use hobby spray (to suit different surfaces) from a DIY store (AVA, Hornbach etc).
It is easy and quick to do, but remember to do several thin layers rather than one thick that could easily end up with running paint. And of course choose a spot that could be a be messy (garage or outdoor) to do this kind of work.
I’m happy to have transformed this white and innocent lamp into something bold and mysterious. So go ahead and search your attic or basement for items you can up cycle and give new life to!
