EASY-TO-SEW ADVENT CALENDAR

The countdown has begun! The counting of the days until Christmas can begin on December 1st, so it’s getting time to take care of the advent calendar for the kids…

As every year, I prepare 2 different calendars, just the receivers are now different. If Noa always received the Lego Star Wars calendar, he recently decided that he was too old for this and requested his personalized one, in the style of Zoe’s… And as time is limited, I decided to buy an appropriate one for Kristof, ‘cause putting together 3 full advent calendars seemed a little bit too much for me. That’s the reason why Kristof will have the pleasure, this year, to discover the gourmet surprises in the one by Foodist…. and Junior will, as usual, receive his own one by his beloved niece.

This years first advent calendar idea (destined for Noa) has already been presented in an earlier post in the DIY section of the blog and now I am gonna show you how I realized Zoe’s calendar. It’s already been a while since I’ve been juggling with the idea of recycling the many fabric leftovers I’m actually collecting and this calendar really helps you to get rid of some part of it!

You need:

  • 24 different fabric leftovers in different sizes (min. size 12 x 24 cm)
  • yarn, needles, sewing machine, zigzag sewing scissors
  • big sewing needle and baker’ string
  • different punches with Christmas forms + label, drawing paper, stamp pad with number stamps (0-9)
  • basket (optional)

To begin with, I cut the 24 little fabric bags in different sizes, depending on the size of the small gifts. Then fold them lengthwise, fix both sides with needles before sewing the sides together. Attention not to close the opening side of the bags! Then “clean” the 4 sides of the bag with the zigzag scissors. Turn around, the bag is ready to be filled!

Now you can prepare 24 labels either with the label punch or cutting the form out of the thicker drawing paper. Decorate them with the form punches before stamping the numbers on them. True, you can also easily buy numbered labels at the shop, which will make this step much easier, but less funnier also…

Fill the bags with 24 little surprises (chocolate, free perfume samples, candy, stickers, etc.) and use the big needle and the baker’ string to close them and to respectively add one numbered label. And your advent calendar is ready to be discovered!

For the presentation and storage, I used a basket to regroup the 24 surprise bags…
