WORKING IN THE GARDEN

Already July and we haven’t had the time yet to really work in our garden even though we can already collect our first salads! On some rare occasions when we’ve been at home and when the weather was fine, we did some gardening.

Let me first present you our raised bed, which is divided into different parts. The raised bed is great for growing small plots of veggies and flowers. It keeps pathway weeds from the garden soil, prevent soil compaction, provides good drainage and serves as a barrier to pests such as slugs and snails.

Each of our 2 boys has his own little square of garden. As our daughter is no longer interested in watching the plants grow, we use hers for our own needs. One subdivision is reserved for the mint, in order to keep it narrow. A larger part is filled with the different herbs we use for cooking like the rosemary, parsley, sage, etc. Another plot is reserved for the different kinds of salad and tomato plants. The last rectangle is yet again filled with some more salads, onions and some pumpkins (which are actually growing very, very big!). And, yes, it seems that we are really, really fond of salads!

We began mid March with cleaning the herbs and the mint in the raised bed. Charel attached his small insect hotel he made last year on our apple tree, not yet sure if this is the right place for it… And we still have to find the right sunny place to install the kid’s bigger insect hotel.

Over one month we did not really find the time to do some gardening because of the weather, I believe, or because we were just too busy elsewhere… Mid April we finally cleaned some parts of the garden from old plants, which still survived from last year. Afterwards, Kristof had the difficult part with the digging, before using the rake. But he received also precious help by Charel!

As we are collecting organic waste in the back of our garden, we wanted this year to use our own homemade compost to fertilize the soil. Unfortunately this first try was not yet 100 % satisfying as we had a lot of weed coming out of it. So much, that we could not really distinguish it from the other plants we’ve sowed. We do still have to improve our method for next year!

In the meanwhile, local supermarket Cactus organized a marketing campaign with stickers and seeds to collect. Our youngest son was so keen of this that we’ve now more than enough seed packages to sow over the next 5 years which will make a lot of salads and sherry tomatoes!

In May we finally took care of a small gardening DIY. Charel and I decorated some flowerpots and created some garden marker following the instructions by Merlanne with blackboard paint and chalk. We even tinkered a flowerpot made out of an old tomato basket. After having planted the cherry tomatoes and sunflowers in the pots, they were placed on the windowsill in the kitchen, next to the basil and rosemary pot.

I planted some salad plants and sowed some salad seeds from the Cactus collection as well as some pumpkins and onions in our raised bed. A few weeks ago, we’ve found out that the Cactus seeds were not growing into salads but into sherry tomato plants… We have actually today a quite large collection of those tomato plants! Somebody interested? Just mail me at hello@fredke.lu ! I am more than happy if I can give away some of them knowing that they will be loved and cared for and in return they will offer you some delicious and juicy sherry tomatoes!
