Wedelhütte: a romantic ski lodge, 2350 m above sea level

After several years of analyzing, I’ve finally collected all the information necessary to present you the Wedelhütte, the unusual but romantic destination to stay with your beloved one (or with your family) situated in the middle of the Austrian Alps.

We first discovered this quaint looking ski lodge situated in the Zillertal mountains four years ago. Nestled between the summits Wimbachkopf and Marchkopf (connecting the Kaltenbach to the Hochfügen ski resort), we once made a stop over there on a snowy afternoon for a hot chocolate (NO, it was not for a glass of champagne but it could have been though!). And what we discovered charmed us straight away…

Built in 2009, this charming yet traditional looking chalet offers not only a sympathetic restaurant, bar and terrace but also a comfortable lounge on the top floor with a splendid view over the overwhelming mountain landscape and were you can savor a four-course gourmet menu at lunchtime. Very convenient: you just have to leave your ski shoes at the cloakroom for some cozy house slippers. But don’t forget that you still need to put on your skis after lunch to get back home… unless you are staying in one of the few hotel suites…

Our discovery, this year, was the new modern looking eating area, the Wimbach Stube, which has been added to the lodge last summer.

Since our discovery of the lodge, we were planning to stay at least one night, in the middle of nowhere! And this year, we finally made it! Our kids stayed in the valley at the hotel with our friends (big thanks to both of you for everything!) and we made our way up to the mountain with our bags and on our skis. Unfortunately or rather fortunately: bad view, snow and heavy wind were on the agenda.

Very convenient: we just had to leave our luggage at the cable car on the mountain. They do have a special carriage where all the bags of the hotel guests are collected through the day. At the end of the ski day the luggage is delivered to the lodge. Same thing for the way back: you just have to deposit you bags in front of your room in the morrning and collect it back on your way back down to the valley. We tried it and it works trouble-free!

Now we just had to make our way up to the lodge over the slopes and the different ski lifts. Arriving on the top of the Marchkopf, we spotted the majestic Wedelhütte below the slopes. We just had to head down, get rid of our skis and to check in!

We received a warm welcome at our arrival and we were shown our junior suite which was equipped with a comfortable king sized bed and cozy sofa corner in front of the panoramic window with south-facing balcony. Unfortunately we could not really enjoy the view as the weather was not top but the sound of the howling wind was also worth it!

Of course, the flat screen TV, DVD/CD player, Ipod deck and Nespresso coffee machine (for the pleasure of my man) weren’t missing in this cosy room. The bathroom was equipped with a hairdryer, a double washbasin, spa shower and a practical infrared sauna cabin (good for relaxation, pain relief, detoxification, improved blood circulation, skin purification…) we did not miss to try out!

We were just in time to enjoy the afternoon tea (well yes, this time it was a Gin Tonic 😉 ) and cakes in the lounge on the top floor before heading down to the wellness area to relax a bit. After a sauna session, we stayed in the outdoor whirlpool with the wind howling around us! What an experience!

Just in time to try out the infrared sauna cabin, to take a shower and to dress up for the four-course dinner in the restaurant. The menu was quite nice, but not really surprising for us, as the menu is similar to the gourmet menu at the lounge we’re used from the past years. But we had a really nice dinner in a very romantic ambiance!

After a good night’s sleep and a great breakfast, we were ready to hit the slopes again!

Our conclusion: the Wedelhütte is a romantic alpine hut, we only can recommend! I am already dreaming to get back for more than one night!
